Shout out to the gig economy workers
On whole having a full-time job with a single employer is a blessing when there are benefits that come with the role. After more than 4 years on contract with my employer, with scant benefits and limited job security, I was only recently made a ‘regular’ employee. I’m now eligible for job security provisions, supplementary health and dental insurance, generous parental leave, and the opportunity to take unpaid or self-funded leaves of absence, all of which I’m excited about and grateful for.
I see you millennials out there in the gig economy, hustling every day to make a living. The grass is always greener on the other side, so on days when the 9-to-5 grind gets me down (i.e., all the time), I envy your freedom to theoretically work for whoever you want, sometimes from wherever you want. But I know it can be much more challenging than the gilded cage work situation I now have.
